Detailed information to come.

“My grandfather Nazzareno, when he was washing his face, was very carefull not to swallow even a drop of water, in fact, since he was a boy, the only liquid he has been swallowing was wine, only wine, farmer’s wine he was making by himself, in times with when there were no professional oenologists. My other grandfather Giuseppe was making wine by himself too and my father Gaspare no less so. Could have I broken the tradition? Never!” – Valter Mattoni

Valter Mattoni is a designer by trade, a natural artist with a boisterous personality and a loud laugh. Built sturdy and with dirt under his fingernails, he is a true farmer who works alone. Fittingly, his local earned nickname is “Roccia” (Rock).

Valter’s vineyards are all within Castorano and include Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Grenache and Trebbiano. Castorano is only a handful of miles inland from the Adriatic Sea and has envious clay/alluvial soils at about 200 – 300 meters in elevation. Valter’s flagship wine, Arshura, is 100% Montepulciano and is widely considered one of the great expressions of Le Marche – Broad shouldered and potent, it is a formidable expression. His Trebbiano is the most unique we have ever experienced - having a signature of cherry and red fruit that one might mistake for a red wine if blindfolded.

As with other growers we work with, Valter works naturally in the vineyards and with a simple hand in the cellar. His cellar is surprisingly clean and organized, with plenty of color and flare. It’s certainly an artist’s cellar, and the purity and pronounced character of his wines makes perfect sense in the context of the man and the land. Simply put, these are singular wines, from a singular man and singular land.
